Presidents Report

Dear Members,

Happy New Year! We are excited to be starting the new year with a great line up of speakers, fishing tournaments, events and travel trips. 2020 should be a great year!
2019 ended with a wonderful Holiday Party hosted by Charlie Greenberg and planned by Bill Dudsiak. Bill did a wonderful job planning and running the party. Thank you! A special Thank you and congratulations to Charlie for being such a gracious host of his beautiful new home.

Fishing has been pretty good when you can get out. I have been getting a lot of sailfish reports and good wahoo fishing both out front and in the Bahamas. I hear that Steve Seigle learned how to catch the wahoo with planers off the edge in Bimini. Probably a good a strategy to have in your back pocket. There seem to be some  good lobster on the reef. Reports have been solid on days you get good clarity.

The clubs fiscal year ends March 31st. We will be taking nominations for the 2020 / 2021 Board of Directors. We would really like to get a few new faces on the board next year. We have a lot of new members that should be able to help us drive participation in our tournaments and events. Please let us know if you have an interest helping with the operations of the club. We have a lot of great positions  – Tournaments, Speaker and Events, Membership etc.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our January Meeting!

Sincerely,
John

TOURNAMENT REPORT

  •

Hey guys let’s get out there and start the new year off right. We have a couple of new members who are eager to get out there and fish. And what better way of meeting and getting to know them than spending the day out fishing.

If you have a friend who would like to join but is not in the club we will try to get them on a boat as long as we have enough room for all of our anglers who are members first.

We are planning on having a Hat Tournament Saturday March 7th. We are going to be in the middle of sailfish season and this is a perfect window to do our annual sailfish tournament. If you would like to enter your boat or be an angler please feel free to email me or text me at 954-224-4184.

We will be picking angler names out of a hat at the February meeting which is a week and a half before our tournament date. Depending on how many boats and anglers participate we can book the yacht club for lunch and weigh-in after fishing.

Tournament Rules:

Lines in will be 7:00am and lines out will be 1:00pm.

Point System
Sailfish release is 25 points each
if There are no sailfish caught the winner will be decided by a meat fish at 1 point per pound. Any legal all size fish will count

DIVE REPORT

The weather has been tough for diving.  Water temperature is down just below 75 degrees, and with the cold weather lately, you need to dress warm both for above and below the surface.  Three weeks ago we able to limit out lobsters and we dove again this weekend and picked through a lot of short lobsters to eventually wind up with 20 keepers.  Visibility was pretty good, and we saw several large male hogfish.  They clearly know they are out of season.  We will be organizing a dive and after-dive party for the last weekend in March just before lobster season closes.  We are also going to try to put together a level I free diver course for an upcoming weekend this spring once the weather warms up.  Reach out to Steve Siegel if you have an interest in that.

TREASURERS REPORT

Happy New Year to all LHPSSA members, family and other interested parties.  As your Treasurer for the past 3 years I thought it would be good to provide all with the financial status of the association.  I’m very happy to report that the association is in excellent fiscal shape with 25 thousand dollars in reserve savings and a general operating balance for 2020-2021 of 32 thousand dollars.  The 25K in savings has been a carryover of savings from many years of excellent fiscal responsibility by prior board members and treasurers.  I do find it interesting that our annual bank balances, at any given time, are within $500 of a previous year’s balance for the past 3 years.  We have a balanced budget, and are enjoying dinners, speakers, quality raffles, tournaments, dive events and numerous club fishing/diving trips on a regular basis.
Gee I forgot to mention annual awards that are second to none, and always beautiful trophies.  Let me not forget the wonderful efforts of Bill Dudziak for his unbelievable efforts putting together several high-end social events for our fishing and diving family.  His hard work, and the generosity of other club members providing facilities has saved the club hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars over the past few years.
Going forward I strongly encourage all members to participate in all our activities and take advantage of your membership benefits.  At monthly meetings we do our best to provide quality raffles, the profit of these raffles provides income to keep membership dues down and also goes towards the purchase of door prizes.
One last note, during the last year substantial effort went into the administrative effort of turning our association into a 501 (c)(7) Non-Profit Social Group for purposes of our tax filings, which legally eliminates our tax obligations.  Note, we are not a 501 charity.  Sorry no charity deductions here.

Bottom line: our association is in excellent fiscal shape.

May all of you have tight lines for the New Year.

I look forward to serving the association as Treasurer for the coming year.

Mike Price

This Month we have another great SPEAKER!!!

Capt. Rick Murphy

Most of you will recognize Capt Rick from the TV show Florida Insider Fishing Report. He has fished all around the world and has a wealth of knowledge. A topic of discussion for the meeting will be the legendary Casa Viejo Lodge and the unique fishing they have to offer. Below is a biography on our speaker ….

All my life I’ve been fishing for adventure––and boy, did I find it––in the waters off Key Biscayne, Lake Okeechobee and beyond … in the TV studio where I get to share tips and techniques with viewers to improve their catch … in the friendships of my crew and sponsors who believe in me and support what we do … in the faces of kids who’ve just discovered what I found out when I was five: fishing is a blast!
My family calls me a fishaholic. That’s because I even fish on my day off. (The funny thing is, they’re usually right there with me!) All I know is I’m hooked––on nature, the thrill of the sport, my fellow anglers and fans, and championing the cause of conservation by reminding others of our duty to preserve our oceans and their inhabitants.
In life, people often judge you by the numbers. And every year since 1994 ours have grown stronger. We’ve gone from one show to three, thousands of viewers to millions, and one or two sponsors to dozens. But the numbers aren’t what get me up in the morning. It’s the joy of guiding, fishing, teaching and being outdoors that turns every day into an adventure. I hope you’ll join me.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
JOHN PIOTROWSKI

Dear Fellow Club Members,

I hope this letter finds you all doing well! Our club – THE  – LIGHTHOUSE POINT SALTWATER SPORTSMANS ASSOCIATION has some really great things coming up so we figured it would be a great time to revamp our communications. It feels good to be kicking the fall off with a brand new newsletter! Thank you Joe, Mark, Dennis, and the team for figuring out a new format! We will do our best to keep them coming!

We are just coming off another great Club Wahoo Trip that was a success! Some nice Wahoo caught aboard the Relentless with the never faltering Capt. Siegel on the helm. Great work guys! They braved the rough seas to cross on a snotty day only to be rewarded with a less crowded Bimini and more fish. Such a blessing to have guys from the club to make that trip!

The winning didn’t stop there! Trae West put together another great Club Battle Tournament  that was a huge success! From what I hear the World Famous Meat Wagon Wins Again! Great job boys – sails, dolphin, smiles all around. We will call that a win for the LHPSSA as most of the anglers were from LHPSSA and the others were members of the LHPSSA before joining other clubs. Kona Blue finished second out of the LHPSSA boats. Great job Capt. Golden! Gene Stoller and Charlie Berkley fished with Mike. 3rd Place for the LHPSSA boats went to My Time/Big Dog Tackle with Trae West representing for the club. Congrats to all for doing a great job representing our club!

I know you guys can’t stop winning so we have on of our first Fall Hat Tournaments coming up on December 14th! The Tournament Committee will be announcing the Game Plan at our November Club Meeting on Wednesday 11/20/2019. I hear Trae is going to out do himself with door prizes this month!

Although the weather did not cooperate as we would of liked –  a special Thank You to Arnie for putting together another fantastic Venice Trip. Some time in New Orleans and the ride out of the Mississippi is worth the trip in and of itself. I know several of the boats loaded up with Tuna even though the seas were rough. The evenings in the lodge by the bar with your friends from the club never gets old.

I am very proud to announce we have just inducted 7 new members bringing our Membership to almost 90 again and I hear we have a number of new potential candidates in the pipeline! Very exciting to get some new blood involved. I would join just to get one of those fancy new shirts that our famous artist and special guest member Dennis Friel was awesome enough to design. Thank you Dennis!

I also hear we have some really exciting club parties on the horizon. We all know that when Bill gets to planning we all are in for a treat! Charlie Greenberg has graciously offered his beautiful new home as a venue. Wait till you see his new crib! More details to come in this months meeting at the Yacht Club!

Also this year we launched the “LHPSSA Fishing Reports & Intel” group on the FishAngler mobile app so that club members can stay connected to the LHPSAA community, share in real time their Fishing Experiences, and submit Fishing Reports to compete for yearly awards, all within a private LHPSSA membership environment. So far 50% of the club has downloaded the app and joined the group! We want to encourage everyone in the club to join the LHPSSA group and contribute. During the monthly LHPSSA meetings while sharing fishing reports around the room, we hope to be able to show off photos of your catches that you have posted!

We will be running into 2020 with swelling membership, really cool and new fishing tournaments and events, a calendar of really top notch speakers and some new meeting venues. Its so special for me to see the new relationships that develop as our club grows and to know that many of our members lives will be forever changed because of our great members and the friendships they develop. Even those members that move away, enter different phases of their life or just take a break from club life – they will never lose the memories, friends and experiences they gained from THE ONE AND ONLY –  LIGHTHOUSE POINT SALTWATER SPORTSMANS ASSOCIATION.

Looking forward to see all of you at the upcoming events!

Sincerely –
Your President

TOURNAMENT REPORT
This previous weekend on November 16th 2019, Big Dog Tackle held their 2nd annual Club Battle Tournament. Being a Sailfish and Meatfish combined tournament, this gave many teams a chance to pull together enough points to win the glory for their club. LHPSSA club members Tom Jones, Steve Siegel, and Mike Price along with their crew on the Meat Wagon managed to catch and release 4/5 sailfish, 4 gaffer mahi mahi, and a keeper kingfish.  Their sails were enough to push them to the top of the leaderboard and crown them champion of the 2nd annual Club Battle Tournament.

The Bimini Wahoo Trip was 10/26 – 28 out of the Bimini Big Game Club. Unfortunately, the weather played havoc with this trip and only one boat made the crossing. It was a struggle but Team Relentless finally got into some nice wahoo. Steve Siegel was joined by Tom Heller, Joe Whitefall, Eric Melnicoff and Mark Repetski as well as a couple other members of the Sir’ Reel team. They rounded out the trip with a day of free diving and spearfishing at Middle Isaacs.

The next HAT tournament is around the corner and we only have two boats and 6 anglers signed up at this time. We could certainly use more boats and anglers for this tournament. The more members we can get the better. This will keep out friendly competitive HAT tournament tradition alive. Check your schedule and sign up now!

We are planning on having the Hat tournament Saturday December 14th. We are going to be in the middle of sailfish season and this is a perfect window to do our annual sailfish tournament. If you would like to enter your boat or be an angler, please feel free to email me (jeronimo1996@hotmail.com) or text me at 954-224-4184.

DIVE REPORT

It has been a tough year so far for lobsters, especially compared to last year, although there have been some reports in the last week of good numbers in shallow.  Hogfish season is now closed, but there have been some nice black grouper taken off the third reef this month.  The guys on Relentless put in a day of spearing after wahoo fishing over in Bimini and got some nice hogfish.  If any of the divers in the club want to get out either locally for some dives or head across to spear some fish, reach out to dive chairman Steve Siegel and he will try to put something together.

Members,

Starting in 2018 we will be introducing a new series of Tournaments in addition to our annual Hat Tournaments. We will be working with the new and improved LHP Yacht Club to host the new club tournaments. There will be significant prizes, entertainment, new twists, food and beverages, sponsors, demo products and more. You will be able to build your own teams so start planning now! As long as there are two LHPSSA anglers on board anything goes. We are looking at hosting the first tournament Jan. 27th 2018. We are in the process of confirming dates with the tournament committee, venue, sponsors, musicians, caterers ect.

We will have prizes for individual anglers and boats. We will have Calcutta style bonus categories. We will have Triple Threat Pool style awards that roll over to the next tournament. Your team will accumulate points toward a series CHAMPION that will earn additional prizes. Yes, there will be monetary prizes. There will be entry fees for each boat and additional categories just as with any tournament. (Entry & Category fees will be very reasonable as the club will be shifting funds to help with these new tournaments along with our sponsors) We will target 3 to 4 tournaments in the series and plan to host the CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT in May or June. Final rules will be posted soon. We will likely include some awards or points for fish shot while free diving or tank diving. We will be publicizing tournaments and results in various publications and online sources. Order your team shirts now so you look good on camera!

LETS BE CLEAR, THIS IS A LHPSSA TOURNAMENT SERIES.

BIMINI WAHOO TRIP!!!

We are planning our annual Bimini Wahoo Trip for November 20-22, Friday – Sunday.  This is always one of the best trips of the year. Please join us either as a captain or an angler.

New members – this is a great trip to get to know some of the best fisherman in the club and learn a ton about wahoo fishing and Bahamas trips.  If you have a boat but not a lot of Bahamas wahoo experience, let me know and I will make sure to get you an experienced crew.

Once I get a handle on how many boats and anglers, I will coordinate the details of where we are staying and timing and crews.

In addition to high speed wahoo trolling, I’m sure some of the crews will do some deep dropping, yellowtailing or spearfishing.

Details of the Saturday wahoo tournament to follow in a subsequent email.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  Otherwise, to register, please email me at ssiegel@laborlawyers.com or call me at (954) 594-4514 or register on the website.

1) Most fish caught

2) Most variety of fish caught

3) Most snapper/grouper keepers

4) Biggest snapper or grouper keeper

5) Most outstanding catch – this is for a kid who catches something else big – mahi, king, wahoo, sail, big bonita, etc.

Each kid can only win one category.

Kids Fishing Tournament – 8/22

We have not had many sign ups for the kids tournament – so far only Rick Moore, Charley Berkley and Chris Castles.  If we don’t get a few more boats, we may need to cancel. Please call (954) 594-4514 or email me (ssiegel@laborlawyers.com) to sign up or you can sign up on the website.   Here is the information:

With the help of Rick Moore, the Club is planning a kids fishing tournament for Saturday August 22.  All kids age 14 and under are welcome to fish – kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, your neighbor’s kids, etc.  We will fish from 8:00 – 12:30 and then gather at Rick’s house for a pizza and pool party with the kids.  This will be a bottom fishing tournament with the main goal being for the kids to catch lots of fish.   Once we get a better handle on participation, we will figure out the prize categories, which will probably include categories for most fish caught and most variety of fish caught as well as biggest snapper/grouper and most keepers.  This should be a great event.   If you have kids who want to fish and don’t have a boat, let us know and we will do our best to get you on a boat.

Trophy Case

Gentlemen,

The LHPSSA trophy case that was at the IGFA is available if anyone can use it. It is currently in the club’s storage unit (on Federal Hwy in Pompano). We are closing the storage unit at the end of the month so unless someone takes it, it will go to the dump. The base of the unit is in good shape. The top portion of the unit is mostly plexi glass and has a number of scratches. It would take some work to put it back in good shape. It has 2 etched edge glass shelves that were made by Island Glass.

Let me know if anyone is interested or would like more information.

Thanks,

Mark Repetski

DOLPHIN HAT TOURNAMENT – RESULTS

We had a great turnout on Saturday with 22 anglers on 6 boats.  A lot of fish were caught, although fishing was a little tough at times.  And the winner is . . .

Bob Schulman, Sarge Crowell and Burt Dubois – This 3 man team cleaned up!  55 total points with their 3 biggest dolphin weighing in at 24, 12 and 10 lbs, with 9 other keepers.  They outsmarted the rest of the fleet and fished on the shallow side, with most of their fish coming inside of 900 feet.

2nd place:

Steve Siegel, Matt Cappiello, Walter Cornwall and Jim Blake – We had a good day with our top 3 fish weighing in at 13, 8 and 5 lbs, with 8 other keepers.  Most of our action was between 900 and 1500.  We also watched a white marlin put on a little show right next to our boat but could not get him interested in anything we had to offer.

3rd place:

Charley Berkley, Larry Crismond and Trae West – These guys had 3 dolphin weighing in at a total of 20 lbs and 2 other keepers for a total of 22 points.

Congrats to the winners and thanks to everyone for a great tournament.

Our thoughts and Prayers for Brad

Its with a heavy heart that I share we received word that Brad Rinsem’s wife Christina passed away yesterday morning. We would ask that you keep Brad and his family in your thoughts. We do not have much information as of yet. We believe Brad’s family will be holding a memorial in the Twin Cities in July. As we get more information we will share it with the club.

5/1 – 3 Key West Trip

Gentlemen,

Our trip is now less than a week away. Even the weather looks like it is cooperating. We have 5 boats fishing the tournament on Saturday. Rules and teams are listed below. Sherman Nicks will be master of ceremonies. All the team captains (whoever is listed first for your boat below) should contact Sherman after you are done fishing to report your catches so he can determine the winner.

Trash talking to your tournament opponents will commence Friday evening over dinner at Benihana (3591 S Roosevelt Blvd). Dinner reservations are set for 7pm. We have 35 people signed up (see list below).

We have a set menu for the group:

Menu: $27.00 (including tax and gratuity) per person.

Teriyaki Chicken Dinner: Served with Hibachi Fried Rice, Japanese Onion Soup, Benihana Salad, Shrimp Appetizer, Hibachi Vegetables, Homemade Dipping Sauces and Japanese Hot Green Tea.

If anyone has issues with the menu, they can order whatever they want from the general Benihana menu. Everyone is responsible for paying their own tab. In addition, sushi platters for the group will be at your tables. The club is picking up the tab for this.

If for any reason you will not be able to make dinner or will not be able to make it on time, please contact Sherman Nicks (954 610 3639) so that he can coordinate with Benihana. Benihana has been very flexible and accommodating with us to handle our group so please be sure to communicate any changes in plans.

We currently do not have any events organized for the ladies/anyone that will not be fishing on Saturday. There was a lunch at Sunset Key in prior years. We have the contact information for Sunset Key to try to set it up if there is a group interested. I would like to get someone to organize this if there is sufficient interest so please let me know if there is any interest in the event and if anyone’s spouse would volunteer to coordinate.

Let me know if there any changes to the list below. I will only be around until Thursday morning to help coordinate things. If something comes up after that, please get to Sherman.

Thanks,

Mark

Take a Hero Fishing Tournament – Reminder

I want to remind everybody about the upcoming Take A Hero Fishing Tournament on Friday May 8th. This is also going to be a Club boat tournament within the bigger tournament. If you are a captain and have already signed up or plan to sign up, please send me an email so that I can keep track of who is fishing. If you would like to enter and do not have a boat, let me know and I will see if there is any room on any of the Club boats.

Rules/Points:

Lines in and out follows the tournament times, which I believe is 8 am – 2 pm. In terms of scoring, this tournament is about keeping the rods bent for the guys we are taking fishing. (Almost)every fish caught counts. 1 point per pound for all meat fish (including kingfish, mahi, tuna, wahoo, snapper, grouper, cobia, tripletail, etc.), regardless of size. 25 points for Sailfish Release. 100 points for a marlin release. 5 points for shark, amberjack, barracuda, etc. release. 5 points maximum for each bonita caught (all of which should be saved for the guys in the club who use them for swordfish bait – I can collect these at the end of the tournament). No points for remora, triggerfish or other non-edible reef fish.

Let me know if you have any questions.  This is being sent out under John’s login, so please email me directly at ssiegel@laborlawyers.comThanksSteve Siegel.

3/29 HAT Tournament Results

We finally pulled off a tournament! Congrats to Meat Wagon with Tom Jones, Sherman Nicks and Arnie Sedel. They released a sailfish and caught a nice kingfish to take top honors. Split Decision took second with the only other qualifying fish of the tournament (11lb king). Rick Moore, Stu Hirsch, Greg McLaughlin and Mark Repetski made up the Split Decision team. Here Fish! did not have a qualifying fish but managed to get 5 kings and a dolphin along with some bonita. Marlin Darlin also had a few opportunities on kings and sails but couldn’t get one to the boat. It was a great way to end our HAT Tournament year – we had the 4 top guys in the annual point standings fishing on different boats so the HAT championship was up for grabs. More on the outcome later.

The weather in the morning turned out to be excellent. Just enough of a north/northwest wind to fly kites and a slight north swell. Everyone saw action early and then it slowed down as the wind shifted. At the end of the tournament, it was blowing pretty good from the north and the seas started to build but it was still never a problem.

Thanks to all that participated.

Mark

It should be an interesting day. All the top contenders to win the annual HAT tournament trophies are fishing and on different boats. This should be fun.

3/28 HAT Tournament – Update

The weather forecast for the tournament is not exactly what we were hoping for. It looks like it will be blowing 15 to 20 knots from the north/northwest but with seas only 2 -4 ft with some 5s near shore. As long as the wind stays slightly from the west, we should be ok. We are going to wait till tomorrow morning to make the call. I will talk to the captains in the morning to get consensus and then we will get something out to the club.

Thanks for your patience.

It is time to get organized for our upcoming Key West trip. We are planning to have our fishing tournament on Saturday, 5/2. This will be a Boat tournament – you can choose your own teams but there must be at least 2 club members on the boat. Tentative rules are below. Everyone will be on their own for booking boats for the tournament. I will get out a list of potential boats but there are plenty of excellent captains to choose from. Remember, that weekend is the opening of grouper season and prime time for the mutton snapper spawn so please organize your teams and book your boats early. I will help put people together that are looking for a boat or looking for anglers to fill their boat.

Everyone typically stays in a variety of hotels so you will be on their own for booking a room. I will try to get out a list of potential hotels and rates.

Frank Schmidt and Sherman Nicks are organizing a dive for any members interested in diving on Friday. Please contact them if you are interested.

We are also organizing a group dinner for Friday evening at Benihana. Everyone thought they did a great job for us at our tournament 2 years ago so we will put something together again.

At this point, we need to get a list of those people interested in attending. If so, please email me the following info:

How many (and who) in your party –

Do you need a boat –

If you have a boat booked, are you looking for additional anglers (if so, how many) –

Are you interested in attending dinner at Benihana Friday evening and , if so, how many in your party –

Deliver the Dream Tournament Details

Save the Date

LHPSSA is once again seeking to sponsor the Deliver the Dream, Fishing for the Dream tournament. This year’s date is June 12-13. Once again it will be based out of LHP Yacht Club.
This year we will add a “tournament within the tournament” to add excitement and hopefully draw significantly more boats. Details to follow.
As in the past, I will be soliciting 25 guys to donate $100 to allow us to purchase the sponsorship. A drawing will be held, from the donor’s list, to pick the winner of the tournament registration. Early sign up is $400, $450 at the Captain’s meeting.
Any questions, please call me.

12/20 HAT Tournament Results

Team Whistlin Dixie won its second tournament in a row with 4 sailfish releases. Congratulations to Sherman Nicks, Tom Jones and Stu Hirsch. Word on the street is that Sherman is now offering to teach sail fishing clinics to club members. If someone doesn’t knock Sherman off the pedestal in our January 17 tournament, we may create a monster!

Second place went to Team Here Fish! with Steve Siegel, Charlie Berkley, Rick Moore and Gene Stoller. That had 2 sailfish and a 17lb wahoo.

Third went to Sub Dude with Lou Sottini, Steve Fishman, Mike Price and Frank Schmidt. They caught 1 sailfish and a dolphin.

Miami Bent Range Marker

Gentlemen,

As we discussed at the meeting last Wednesday, below is an email from Bruce Marx (the attorney in Miami leading the charge to save the marker) listing all the pledges received from the fishing community to try to prevent the demolition of the marker. Basically, the Bob Lewis Fishing Tournament would take over responsibility for maintaining the marker (which is one of the main bait catching spots in Miami) going forward. As you can see, there are a number of people on the list that have been very good to our club. This issue may not be in our backyard but if you have any interest in supporting this cause, please contact either Bruce Marx or Rob Ruwitch at the email addresses below.

Thanks,

Mark

Dear All:

We have now received over $100K towards the DERM costs for a total of $215,457.00 in pledges, to date.  I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to make a pledge.  I also wanted to advise that pledges are still need.  All of the government officials with whom I have been speaking have commented on how impressed they were with the fishing community’s passion and support for this cause.  As a result of this support, these government officials understand the import of the Bent Range Marker to the fishing community and are looking at this matter very closely.

Therefore, please continue to spread the word amongst your network and request that pledges be sent to Rob Ruwitch at Rumcayrob@aol.com and to me at Bmarx@marlowadler.com.  Thanks, again.

11/29 HAT Tournament Results

Whistlin’ Dixie took first place with 2 sailfish and a healthy 37lb kingfish. Sherman Nicks, Staley Weidman, Phil Crowell, Charlie Berkley and Fred Bamman made up the team. Congratulations! Second place went to Team Split Decision with Mark Repetski, Burt Moss, Frank Schmidt, Steve Siegel and Matt Cappiello. They caught 1 sailfish and a dolphin. There were no other qualifying fish caught but all the boats saw action with kingfish and dolphin. The weather was a big question going into the tournament but it turned out to be very manageable with decent size swells but not much chop on top of them. The entire fleet met at the yacht club for lunch following the tournament. Not a bad day!

Thanks to all who participated. Our next HAT tournament is scheduled for 12/20. Mark your calendars. Details will be out soon.

11/29 HAT Tournament Update

Gentlemen,

All of the captains are still planning to fish tomorrow so the tournament is on. The weather forecast is for 15-20 knot winds from the NE and 2-4ft seas with some 6 footers nearshore and 4-6ft with some 8s offshore. I know not everyone finds that comfortable. All the captains agree that if anyone does not want to go out, they can cancel free of charge (you don’t owe your share of the expenses). If you want to cancel, let your captain know as soon as you can.

FYI – Greenberg already has 3 sails and some dolphin this morning just in case you need some incentive.

Thanks and let me know if you have any questions.

Mark

There is no requirement to call in fish but I would like everyone to call in catches so everyone knows what the competition is doing. The weather doesn’t look wonderful but perhaps it will motivate the sailfish. If the forecast starts looking ugly, we will make a decision on Thursday evening or Friday morning. We are set up to have lunch at the YC from 1 to 2 pm. Captains/crews, please get in touch to work out logistics. Good luck to all.

Anyone not on the list below that figures out they can fish should call me. We are pretty full on each boat but I will see if I can find a spot.

Call me with questions.

11/14 – 16 Bimini Wahoo Tournament Results

We ended up with 4 boats and 13 club members fishing the tournament. Unfortunately, it was one of those “you should have been here yesterday” trips. Most of the people fishing on Thursday and Friday did ok on wahoo. However, none of our boats caught one on Saturday so we did not have a tournament winner. Fortunately, some of our members went to plan B and did well deep dropping and spear fishing. Hopefully, we will get a few good stories from the crews at the meeting tonight.

Lets have a great turnout! As usual, sign up on the website or email me at mrepetski@att.net.

11/14 – 16 Bimini Wahoo Tournament

This will be a boat tournament – captains pick who they want on their boat. The only requirement is that there are at least 2 club members on the boat to participate in the tournament. The Bimini Big Game Club is also having their Wahoo Smackdown tournament from 11/13 – 15 so we will overlap. Our tournament day will be the 15th. Our rules are below. The rules should allow you to fish both tournaments at the same time on Saturday if you also plan to fish the Smackdown. I have checked and at this point, there does not look like there will be any problem getting accommodations. People can stay where they want but I anticipate most will stay at Bimini Sands.

At this point, I would like to get a list of those that would like to participate. Email, call or sign up on the website. Let me know whether you plan to take your boat, who is fishing with you, and if you have any room for other club members.

As weather is always a question, we will try too have a backup date for the following weekend – 11/21-23.

Thanks,

Mark Repetski

9/27 Swordfish HAT Tournament Winners

Congratulations to team Miss Kristi. Captain Tim Nielsen, Mate Glen Turner, Pete Prior and Joe Ferrero managed to hook the only swordfish of the night. Unfortunately, it jumped off when they were leadering the fish. If the swordfish portions are small at the lobster party, blame it on them! Fortunately for them, it counted as a release in our tournament so they were the official winners. As no other swordfish were caught, there were no second and third place HAT points awarded.

Unfortunately, that was the second swordfish tournament with no swordfish. At some point, we are bound to actually catch one during the tournament. Hopefully, next time.

Thanks to all who participated.

9/27 Swordfish HAT Tournament – Team selections

We may still get a few stragglers but we are up to 16 anglers so everyone will have at least 4 anglers on a boat. See below for team picks along with the tournament rules. Captains/crews, please get in touch with each other to work out logistics.

Split Decision will be the committee boat and will monitor channel 72. 3 of the 4 boats will be going out of Hillsboro inlet. Depending on what time everyone returns, we may meet at the LHP Marina to share a beer and brag about our catches or commiserate about the lack thereof. We will talk on the radio and figure out if anyone is up for that. Jim Blake and Tom Bruer got a 275 pounder on Saturday so I am expecting good things.

So far the weather looks good but we will look at the forecast later in the week and update everyone if anything changes.

Call or email me with any questions.

Cabo San Lucas – 10/25 to 11/1 – 2nd request

Gentlemen,

We have had very little response so far so I am sending this again. Please let me know if you are interested as soon as you can.

Anyone interested in fishing Cabo during the week of 10/25 thru 11/1, please contact me.

Estimated costs for the trip are:

Airfare – approx $650 round trip from Ft Lauderdale. You can get it for approx $550 out of Miami. There are no direct flights. The 1 stop flights are usually around 7 hours.

Hotels – there are a broad range of hotels, from cheap to 5 star. There are a number of good places that are a relatively short walking distance to town and the marina that are priced around $250 – $300/night. You can also get some great deals on skyauction.com or VRBO. There are lots of condo/timeshare properties that can be extremely nice and reasonable. If you get a few people together, you can get 2 or 3 or more bedroom places that are very nice and can cost less than a hotel room.

Boats – like the hotel rooms, there is a great variety of charter boats. On the lower cost end, you can get 31ft Bertrams from Pisces for $580 a day. They are older and slower but get the job done and can accommodate 2 to 4 guys. In the mid range,  you can get newer/faster 29 – 32ft Blackfin/Cabo/K&Cs from Picante/Pochos/Pisces for $800 – $1300/day. These also accommodate 2 to 4 guys. You can also get 45ft Cabos from around $2100 a day from Picante and others. You could put 6 guys on these boats. The prices above do not include tip or fishing licenses ($16 per person)/live bait ($30/doz) or lunch.

Food – there are tons of good restaurants and bars. You can eat cheap or gourmet. Expect to spend the same as you would around here.

We would like to get at least 15 guys to make this work as a club trip. The trip is open for spouses and there are plenty of things for them to do if they don’t want to fish. There are great spas, beautiful golf courses, good shopping, etc. so you should not hesitate to bring a significant other.

October is a busy tournament time in Cabo. We picked this week because it did not have any big tournament going on and is still prime time to fish Cabo. Let me know at your earliest convenience if you would like to go, if you would be taking anyone else and if you would be interested in sharing a charter boat. If you have any questions or would like more info on fishing Cabo, please contact me or Mike Leach.

You can reach me by email (mrepetski@att.net) or phone (954 609 4309).

Thanks,

Mark Repetski

HAT Dolphin/Wahoo Tournament Results

Congratulations to Team Muriel (Capt Hugh Beckett, Mate Steve Siegel, Bob Sablo and Trae West) on the win. They caught 41 dolphin with the largest at 9lbs to edge out Team Crescendo (35 dolphin with the largest at 11lbs). Miss Kristi came in third with 14 dolphin with the largest at 11lbs.

Unfortunately, Marlin Darlin had to cancel at the last minute due to a lighting strike. Sorry to those that did not get to fish but thanks to everyone for trying to scramble to make alternative arrangements. At least all the boats that got out had great weather and caught fish.

HAT Dolphin/Wahoo Team Selection

The teams have been drawn. See below for tournament rules and teams. Captains and crews, please get in touch to work out logistics and provisions. Marlin Darlin will serve as committee boat and will monitor channel 72. It is not mandatory to call in catches but please do so Marlin Darlin can give updates throughout the day. There is still probably room for a couple more anglers so if your schedule frees up and you would like to fish, give me or Matt Cappiello a call and we will see what we can do. I will be out of town from Thursday to Monday so I will not be fishing the tournament. I will not be reachable for most of the time so if a decision needs to be made in my absence, Matt Cappiello will be on point.

The weather forecast is looking good for dolphin hunting. Let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck to all.

5/16 – 18 Lucaya Tuna Trip

Gentlemen,

We are making plans for the May Lucaya tuna trip. We are working on hotel and marina options and putting together a boat tournament (can pick whoever you want to fish on your boat but must have at least 2 club members on board) for Saturday. We need an idea of how many people and boats plan to attend so we can negotiate good rates. This trip is open to spouses, kids, significant others, etc. Please respond to me be email (mrepetski@att.net) if you plan to attend and include the following info:

Name

# of hotel rooms and boat slips you anticipate needing

Will you be taking your boat? If yes, will you have room for others? If no, do you need a boat to ride over and/or fish the tournament on. Everyone will be responsible for making their own arrangements but we will try to help coordinate.

Would you be interested in joining a group dinner?

Do you anticipate having non fishing members in your group that would like to participate with others in shore side activities while the rest of us chase fish?

I’m sure there is more but that should be enough to get the ball rolling.

Thanks,

Mark

2/15 Hat Tournament

We have had a few late entries for the tournament. Below is the latest team list and rules for tomorrow.

Split Decision will be the committee boat and will monitor channel 72. Weather forecast is for west winds from 15 to 26 mph with 2 ft seas. Not what I was hoping for but maybe there will be a fish or two around anyway. After tournament party starting at 5pm at Sherman Nicks’ house (2558 SE 11 St, Pompano Beach, 33062).

Let me know if there are any questions. Best of luck tomorrow.

Mark

1/18 HAT Mixed Bag Tournament Results

Gentlemen,

We had 6 boats and 22 anglers participate in the tournament. We finally got cooperation from the weather but unfortunately, not the fish. There were only a few fish caught and only one qualifying fish. That was a sailfish on tournament winner Split Decision. Rick Moore was on the rod and assisted by Matt Cappiello, Mike Price and Mark Repetski. Congrats! Most of the teams met at the LHPYC after the tournament for lunch and fish stories. Thanks to all that participated.

Our next tournament is scheduled for 2/15. Rules and sign up info will be out shortly.

Mark Repetski
